Abstract

Two pressures encourage constant re-evaluation of rail freight option: environmental concerns and the fact that railways are less congested than roads. Cost and convenience are the barriers. Intermodal transport is a favoured compromise but infrastructure is lacking. Bimodal transport, in which the same vehicle acts as both road trailer and rail truck, overcomes this lack, since it needs minimal mode change equipment and offers pay load advantages in comparison with ISO containers.
