Abstract
Providing bus and rail service for more than 1 million boardings, as Los Angeles County does each day, is a difficult task. 175 million vehicle miles are also logged every day in the County, creating a major smog problem. Finding solutions to provide an efficient transportation system is a challenge under present conditions in the County. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has made considerable progress in developing solutions with the aid of several other agencies. This paper discusses various techniques and programs developed by MTA and its partners to improve the transportation system. These solutions, including a wide variety of intelligent transportation system technologies, are described.
