The author, Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration, recounts the accomplishments, goals, and plans for the Intelligent Vehicle Highway System (IVHS) program in the U.S. Includes discussion of legislative appropriations and FHWA support of the following areas: Real-time traffic control systems; In-vehicle navigation, routing and safety advisory systems; Streamlining the regulatory burden for commercial vehicles, while assuring safety requirements are met; and Early work in advanced control systems such as automated braking for collision avoidance, lane-following, and platooning systems.
