Abstract
As America observes the 40th anniversary of its Interstate Highway System in 1996, we are truly at a crossroads in laying the foundation for the our transportation system in the 21st century. The interstate system in this country has been a major factor in making the U.S. a world economic leader. In order to maintain our economic lead and encourage future economic growth, the interstate system must be maintained. The problem is that while highway needs are mounting, the legislative trend is to downsize budgets and that will over time be disastrous for the interstate. In order to ensure a safe and efficient system of roads and bridges, the USDOT found that the nation should be spending double the current investment level which is about $35 billion a year. That figure is to maintain the roads and bridges at current levels. Future needs and requirements must be considered and anticipated if the interstate system is to continue to be a viable part of this nation's economic growth.
