PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION NEEDS IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

The objective of this paper is to present themes or trends believed to be the dominating concerns of transportation policy makers, analysts, and data managers in the first decade of the new century. These themes are: (1) Transportation in the new century will have to quickly integrate telecommunications and the flow of information; (2) Because of the relationship between telecommunications and travel, new patterns will emerge in the relationship between transportation and urban form and top priorities will have to be readdresses; (3) One of the major transportation problems facing policy makers in the new millennium is goods and people movement; (4) Global warming will have to be looked at more carefully; (5) Equity in transportation policy will result in revising planning regulations and practices to create data support systems for more penetrating analyses of equity in transportation policymaking; and (6) Financing the transportation system through a system of user fees has been traditional in the past, but this may not be possible in the future. It is anticipated that telecommunications will play an important role in transportation in the new millennium.
