Abstract
In the introduction to this publication, a Geographic Information System (GIS) is defined and several technologies related to GIS but not the same as GIS are named and defined. The next section focuses on maps as devices used to communicate the nature of spatial data. This is followed by an examination of the components of GIS: (1) data, (2) hardware, (3) software, and (4) users. The next section examines the functions of GIS, which are compilation, storage, manipulation, and output of mapped data. The final two sections discuss planning for GIS and implications of GIS, respectively.
