Abstract
The economics of steam versus diesel are briefly discussed, and the unfavourable position of steam as a result of the decreasing demand for high power is shown. Ways to make the steam plant more competitive in the future are described, and the discussion then centres on the control systems available, including the use of the microprocessor. Instrumentation and data acquisition are also dealt with.
