Abstract

Since 1975, the author's company, has been involved with the cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures. Initially used just on bridge decks, the technology and applications have progressed to include many types of structures. This paper discusses the actual experiences with various systems including saw slots, overlays, mesh anode systems, and conductive coatings. The performance of each and their applicability to various structures is also discussed. Case histories of cathodic protection installations include not only bridge decks and piers but also building facades, balconies, interior floor slabs and parking garages. Examples of applications in all climates are described including the USA, Europe, and the tropics. A comprehensive review is given of the USA technology and the results of over thirteen (13) years of experience.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 831449.
