Abstract
Among numerous components of a pavement management system, accurate prediction of pavement structural and functional deterioration, systematic analysis of pavement condition, and optimization of pavement maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) program are the major three parts of the system. This paper discusses the functional relationship and integration of these components and how they are used in the development of probabilistic based pavement management system. Through optimization simulation of the maintenance and rehabilitation strategy, the minimum acceptable level that optimizes the pavement life-cycle costs is determined for each individual pavement. The paper highlights some of the findings of a study on probabilistic modeling of pavement deterioration and provides a practical approach to optimal pavement maintenance and rehabilitation activities at network level. For the covering abstract of the proceedings, see IRRD 490713.
