Abstract

This paper summarises the data analysis framework, which has been formulated to develop more effective methods for designing road pavements, through the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) studies of the USA's Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). Two types of experimental test plans are currently being developed for the LTPP programme: (1) the General Pavement Studied (GPS), evaluating nearly 800 selected existing pavement sections; (2) the Specific Pavement Studies (SPS), using new roadway sections and aiming to isolate and observe systematically the effects of certain pavement design factors not easily observed from the GPS sections. The LTPP database will be established at the National Information Management System to be located at the Transportation Research Board in Washington, DC, USA. The next stage of the analysis will be the evaluation and calibration of existing pavement design equations. The observable effects on pavement condition will be estimated, including the structural effects for: (1) asphalt concrete pavements: (2) Portland cement concrete pavements; (3) existing asphalt concrete overlays; (4) planned asphalt concrete overlays. The advanced stages of the analysis plan for GPS data will be developed to determine more complex relationships among the data. (TRRL)
