Abstract

A study was conducted by Dr. F. Gates and his plant ecology class in the years 1946-1954 on various burned sites within the confines of the UMBS. Analysis of the understory data showed there to be errors in the sampling methods, affecting the number and frequencies of the species encountered. Dominance of the understory by certain species was noted. A correlation arose between the number of species found and the sample size. These will be discussed in turn.
