Airports and Air Transport: The Sky’s the Limit

This chapter covers the African air transportation market, air transportation policy, air transportation infrastructure, and air transportation policy challenges. Regional economic development can be stimulated by air transportation. Air transportation employs 120,000 individuals in Africa. Both political and organizational challenges exist to limit the success of air transportation in Africa. In addition, sub-Saharan Africa airlines have some of the worst aviation safety records. Their relatively large number of aircraft accidents are attributed to poor aircraft pilot skills.
