Abstract
Major metropolitan areas are often confronted with the issue of deciding the extent to which mass transit will participate in the urban network. It is important that engineers, planners, and other transportation officials who recommend on such policies consider the relative capabilities of the private automobile as well as mass transit, and gauge the contribution each can make toward the most efficient total system. This article outlines the characteristics and capabilities of rapid transit systems in general, and of present types (circa 1960) and future proposals.
