Abstract
This paper is focussed on the geometric design of rural, two-lane roads and safety. It is mainly based on research results from the Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute. The research results have shown the following: (1) Increased width of lanes, shoulders, and roadway, up to certain limits, normally reduces accident rates; (2) Horizontal radii under 1,000 m increase accident rates; (3) Road sections with short sight distances shower higher accident rates than sections with long sight distances; (4) Roadsides are very important to road safety; and (5) Junctions are specially dangerous spots in a road network.
