Abstract
This study paper examines four essential components of the land use and urban transportation system that influence the demand for public transport. These components are: governance of land use and transportation; funding of public transport systems; strategic investments in infrastructure; and design of neighbourhoods. A review of how the above components were adopted with success in the city of Toronto between the 1950s and 1980s follows and covers changes in the structure post 1980s that resulted in the decline of the once successful model. This paper concludes by identifying transferable lessons from the Toronto experience and suggests measures that could be adopted in Australian cities to influence the demand of public transport.
