Abstract
Significant improvements are continuing in the North American railways world in the productive and safety of their operations. The article discusses the evolution of special track work that has significantly increased service life and safety while maintenance costs have been reduced and axleloads increased. Three specific improvements affecting heavy haul railways are examined: improved running surface profiles for fixed point frogs (turnout crossings); a more durable switch point design; and bainitic steel rail for frogs.
