Abstract
This paper considers current trends in bridge design and construction and their importance in the years ahead. Cost advantages of concrete structures and the implication of this in the types of bridges that will dominate future years, are discussed. Re-assessment of design loads and continuing research into material properties are considered to be important if real economies are to be obtained in bridge construction. Bridge types for both long and short span structures are discussed and the continuing trend to standardised construction is emphasised as a means of minimising cost increases. The responsibility of road authorities to endeavour to provide a satisfactory standard of facility in conditions of diminishing available funds is a consideration of the paper. (Author/TRRL)
