Abstract
Data on pavement condition, ride quality and related analysis on existing roadways and roadside structures are important for a highway department in the decision making process for infrastructure management and rehabilitation, improvement of road geometric and re-alignment study, and traffic studies. This paper attempts to address several key areas of roadway data collection and presents a multimedia based Highway Information System (MMHIS) that extends the capabilities of multi-function data vehicles. Due to limitations in current data vehicles, a new system design for this next-generation vehicle is discussed. The emphasis of the paper is on data collection and data management, rather than data analysis. For the covering abstract of the proceedings, see IRRD 490713.
