Abstract

The author deals with particular aspects of the general topic of Interchange facilities in passenger An analysis is made of the existing rules, regulations and recommendations for the planning and design of interchange works for public transport. The analysis shows that numerous and detailed scientific studies exist on the subject of individual design of interchange facilities with respect to the technical, traffic and operational considerations, which, considered integrally, give an adequate basis for the theoretical and practical consideration of all possible forms of interchange points. The difficulties for the planner begin with the design of networks, consisting of ines of different transport modes. There is a particular lack of working data for the first stage of such planning, which is described as optimating the network-related benefits for passenger and operator. By their nature, combined transport undertakings would seem to be specially suitable for carrying out the appropriate investigations. The second part of the article describes a number of large interchange points in the Frankfurt area, either existing or planned. It can be seen that in designing interchange facilities long-term forecasting of the traffic flows in respect of volume and direction is essential so as to avoid planning errors.
