Abstract

The ASTM Standard Test Method for Slump of Portland Cement Concrete is described, and it is noted that for many of those working with concrete, it is taken as a reflection of the amount of water in a mixture, and used as an indicator of expected strength. This aspect is discussed in this article, and it is emphasized that the slump test is merely an indicator of batch consistency, and nothing more should be interpreted.
