Abstract

This article describes a new light rail system that will eventually link Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, Arizona. The Phoenix metropolitan area has seen its growth double over the past 15 years, and the population is expected to continue to increase at a rate of 100,000 each year. A new transportation strategy includes a bus network that will be implemented in four phases and completed in 2025. The new 20-mile light rail line called METRO will open for service in December 2008. More than 60 consultants are working with Valley Metro Rail (VMR) to design and construct the new line. The article describes how VMR is handling the construction in order to minimize the impact on businesses located along the new rail corridor, as well as changing attitudes in general about light rail.
