Abstract

THE MAJOR CONSTRUCTION, DESIGN AND MATERIALS VARIABLES WHICH AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE (CRC) PAVEMENTS ARE DISCUSSED AND AN OVERALL TREATMENT IS PROVIDED OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS TYPE OF PAVEMENT IN OHIO. UNSTABLE SUPPORT CONDITIONS ACCOMPANIED BY THE LACK OF SUFFICIENT SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE WERE THE MAIN CONTRIBUTORS TO THE OBSERVED PAVEMENT FAILURES. THE SPACING, PATTERN AND WIDTH OF TRANSVERSE CRACKS ARE SIGNIFICANT PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS. PRACTICALLY ALL OF THE FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED IN THE OUTSIDE LANE OF THE CRC PAVEMENTS WHERE THE FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE OF HEAVY TRAFFIC LOAD IS SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER. /AUTHOR/
