ON THE FUTURE OF RAIL TRANSPORT

Abstract

In the course of winter 1978 a series of twelve lectures was organised by the Netherlands Institute of Transport Science and the Royal Institute of Engineers on the topic of the future of rail transport. This article is a summary of this series. It starts with some historical background and deals with the new tasks the railway companies have to face. Some of the conclusions are that the railway companies have to agree on a common approach to the problems ahead, together with the respective governments. They should concentrate on specific transport fields and corridors, guided by a sound knowledge of the consumers' needs.(a)
