Abstract
Automatic train control (ATC) is a complex system of functions at least some of which are at work to some degree on every U.S. rail transit system. In its fullest development ATC consists of three subsystems for automatic train protection (ATP), automatic train operation (ATO), and automatic train supervision (ATS) monitored and directed from a control center. The Atlanta system is used to illustrate the present level of this technology.
