Abstract
With more than 17 years of light rail transit (LRT) construction and operating experience, Calgary Transit has developed a substantial knowledge base regarding the planning, design and operation of LRT systems. The experience gained from construction and operation of successive stages of the LRT system has been used to successfully integrate LRT operations within a variety of surface operating environments. LRT station designs have also been adapted over time to blend with adjacent communities and to improve customer access. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of Calgary LRT surface operations and to describe the techniques used to integrate LRT within the right-of-way of city streets and adjacent communities.
