Abstract

The Brisbane city council acknowledges the bicycle as a potential form of transport and recreation, and in 1977 initiated a program to build bikeways. After a pilot study to determine the characteristics of cyclists in the city, a comprehensive plan for bikeways was prepared and the Brisbane bikeways plan was released in 1983. A number of bikeways in the plan have been constructed and the paper discusses the planning and implementation for these bikeways.
