Abstract

This article provides an overview of transportation planning and urban development, and stresses the importance of coordinating the two to achieve the best results. Five major programs underway in the early 1960s in the U.S., which were seen as shaping the city of the future, are discussed: 1) the National Highway Improvement Program; 2) the Public Transportation Improvement Program; 3) urban renewal; 4) government expansion or reconstruction; and 5) private land development. Examples of planning and development efforts in New Haven, Connecticut, and Boston, Massachusetts, are described, and a summary is provided.
