Abstract

The new research sector dealing with and Services for Tourism was introduced only in 1999 under the 5th European Framework Programme of Research, Technology Development and Demonstration although several research and innovation projects were activated in the past years by European Commission. After a concise overview of the importance of tourism sector for European economy and employment, the evolution of IST (Information Systems and Telecommunications) systems and services for tourism, a rationale for the needs of information- society- oriented research at European level is provided. A description of the achievements of past European Commission initiatives in IST and tourism and perspectives for the future are presented
