Abstract
The availability of public transit systems in rural areas has generally declined over the past two decades. Major new federal programs, however, are beginning to provide money for support of existing and proposed rural transit systems. The objectives of this research was to determine how these systems can be designed so as to be maximally effective in providing transportation service. In working toward this objective, detailed case studies and statistical studies were conducted to relate transit performance with different design factors.
