Abstract
The initial phase of the Athens Metro in Greece will be completed in 2001. It will consist of two underground lines totalling 18 km with 20 stations. The projected daily usage of the network is 450,000 passengers. Two 6.5-km sections were opened in 2000. Project owner Attiko Metro was assisted by Bechtel International. Construction was delayed by archaeological excavations and the varying geological conditions (heterogeneous fractured schist with occurrences of Karstic limestone and peridotite). The New Austrian Tunnelling Method was used for 5% of the running tunnels and six mined stations. Cut-and-cover was used for 35% of the tunnels and the rest of the stations. The remainder of the tunnels were excavated using tunnel-boring machines. The future metro development plan is discussed. For the covering abstract see ITRD E113663.
