Abstract

The Inland Waterways Corporation (IWC) was formed to revitalize commercial transportation on U.S. inland waterways. This paper looks at the extent to which this Federal entity was able to achieve the goals Congress established for it during the years 1924-1939. The IWC was administered by the War Department during this 15-year period, and was transferred to control of the Commerce Department in 1939. The IWC was liquidated and sold to a private interest for $9 million in 1953.
