Abstract
Railways have a key role to play in an efficient public transport network. As these rail systems and the relevant infrastructure have expanded over recent decades, there have been growing requirements for efficient and comprehensive IT systems for planning, operation and controlling. System landscapes undergo different aging processes and the consequence is a large number of IT systems and modules. Railway companies may well employ 20-40 different IT- systems at the same time. Also the separation of network operation and rail operation can result in different IT systems being used for security and operational information. Where completely new railway systems are developed, this requires the rapid implementation of a completely new IT system and its integration into existing infrastructure. Because of the privatisation of public transport services and increased competition there is a need to plan and operate these services quickly and efficiently. The control and approval of the service against the contractor also calls for an integrated IT system landscape Higher passenger expectations concerning real time operational information increases the need for integrated public transport systems. Furthermore, the aim of an integrated rail operation management system is to gradually replace existing systems, to build up a consistent IT landscape, and to integrate existing systems through standard interfaces. Finally, the aim is to reduce operational costs, increase operational stability in combination with higher flexibility, and to attract more passengers by improving customer satisfaction.
