EXAMINATION OF THE INTEGRATION OF CYCLING AND TRANSIT IN FOUR CANADIAN CITIES

Abstract

The Canadian cities of Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver have produced plans, policy documents and bicycle plans which promote bicycling, walking and public transit as modes of transportation. Public transit agencies in these cities have examined the integration of cycling and transit as a means of attracting new riders and of improving the efficiency of existing transit services. There are two ways to integrate cycling with transit: 1. accommodating bicycles on transit vehicles and 2. providing bicycle parking at transit stops. This paper will focus on the latter, the provision of bicycle parking at transit facilities.
