Abstract

BASIC CONSIDERATIONS IN CHOOSING BETWEEN GASOLINE AND DIESEL WITH TYPE OF ENGINE APPLICATION AND HORSEPOWER KNOWN ARE: ORIGINAL COST, FUEL CONSUMPTION, MAINTENANCE COST, OPERATING PERIODS BETWEEN OVERHAULS, WEIGHT AND OVERALL ENGINE SIZE, ENGINE LOAD AND OPERATING LOAD FACTORS, AND WARRANTY. THE HIGHER INITIAL COST OF DIESEL ENGINES MUST BE COMPARED WITH THEIR ADVANTAGES OF MAINTENANCE ECONOMY AND LONG LIFE. IN GENERAL, IN MEDIUM-DUTY TRUCKS OF 18,000 TO 23,000 GVS, GASOLINE ENGINES ARE MORE ECONOMICAL UP TO 20,000 MILES PER YEAR; WHILE IN HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS, DIESEL OPERATION IS NOT JUSTIFIABLE UNDER 70,000 MILES PER YEAR.
