LOCAL GOVERNMENT ROAD SAFETY IN NSW: THE IPWEA ROLE

Abstract

At the local council level, road safety issues have traditionally been addressed through engineering and traffic management measures. In recent years this approach has been broadened to encompass more behavioural and educational aspects, and planning activities, to provide an opportunity for greater involvement of council and the community. This paper reviews some recent initiatives in road safety programs at the local government level in NSW, and focuses on the role of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) in assisting the development of road safety practice in council programs. Specific reference is made to the IPWEA's project activities in road safety strategic planning, its involvement in the delivery of road safety training, and its Road Safety Panel.
