Abstract
The paper notes how the earthquake in San Francisco in 1989 led to a major effort to enforce seismic regulations nationwide. Buildings were reviewed, and requirements were incorporated that increased the design criteria necessary for the protection of the public. In addition to structural specifications, requiremnts for the lateral stability of certain architectural, mechanical, plumbing and electrical building components were included. The problems posed by changing codes are discussed, and the challenges faced in the construction of a specialty building, a hospital in New Jersey, are described. The light-weight steel framing, and the plans for future expansion are described. The present and future critical functions place this building in the highest seismic importance category because of its need to be functional during and after an earthquake disaster.
A significance statement is not available in the OpenAlex record.
A contribution statement is not available in the OpenAlex record.
Method details are not available in the OpenAlex metadata.
Findings are not separately available in the OpenAlex metadata.
Limitations are not available in the OpenAlex metadata.
Application details are not available in the OpenAlex metadata.
