THE USE OF LANE RENTAL CONTRACTS FOR BRIDGE REFURBISHMENT

Abstract

Lane rental maintenance contracts have been shown to give significant savings in time over conventional contracts. Bridge maintenance work is normally incorporated into major resurfacing contracts, but there is often a requirement for bridge refurbishment to be undertaken independently and with the minimum of delay to the travelling public. The paper describes the concept of the lane rental form of contract. Case histories are then presented of schemes recently managed by Frank Graham for the Department of Transport in West Yorkshire. These outline the factors to be considered in the selection of appropriate schemes, the planning of the scheme and the execution of the works on site.
