THE IMPACT OF ACCESSIBILITY ON TRIP PRODUCTION AND TRIP ATTRACTION MODELS

Abstract

This article is an extension of a previous paper using data from the 1966 Middlesbrough survey to analyse the impact of various accessibility measures in explaining trip attraction. Home based work trips, home based other trips and non home based trips are included for both public and private transport under daily weekday conditions. The transport system reflected three main features: travel resistance on the road network, network structure and public transport levels of service. The accessibility measures used, together with their formulation are summarised and details are given of the results. Zonal regression analysis was used to calibrate the trip production models rather than household regression since the set of variables could only be estimated at the aggregate level. A study of the best equations obtained for the trip attraction and trip production models showed that the effects of accessibility measures was greater for trip attraction equations. (TRRL)
