Abstract

Education, or the lack of it, is at the heart of a stubborn traffic-safety problem. The safety problem is how to get automobile drivers to share the road with trucks and buses. According to the FHWA, more than 250,000 crashes occur that involve at least one passenger car and one large truck. Experts say the problem arises because car drivers don't understand the physical limitations of trucks and don't know what behavior truck drivers expect of them. Federal and state agencies have developed a variety of educational campaigns and programs. The most urgent message automobile drivers must learn is about no-zones, truck blind spots. Trucks have huge blind spots which automobile drivers must learn to avoid. Rear, side and front blind spots are places where cars can virtually disappear. Automobile driver education and awareness is a major step in reducing truck/auto crashes.
