Abstract
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a plan to change the state of U.S. general aviation and create a system that will introduce a new mode of travel. NASA has initiated a broad-based research effort to develop a smart--or small--aircraft transportation system (SATS). The NASA vision is for door-to-door flying to and from 5,000 U.S. airports located near places passengers want to travel to and from. This article discusses the public-private consortium that is pursuing the SATS vision, key policy issues, technology issues, economic and policy issues, public concerns (noise, emissions, safety, congestion), the SATS market, and government involvement.
