Abstract
This paper reviews the current methods of concrete specification and testing. Two separate methods have become established for controlling water/cement ratio, the basic parameter influencing the properties of concrete. In the method specification, water/cement ratio is controlled through the mix proportions and the workability of the fresh concrete. With the performance specification, the end-product requirements and controlled through concrete strength. The advantages and limitations of the two methods of specification are discussed and the objects of concrete sampling and testing examined. Recommendations are made concerning the use of different methods of specification and testing to ensure a more economic and efficient use of concrete in the future. /TRRL/
