Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the potential effects of utilizing Intelligent Freight Transportation Systems (IFTS) in transport operations. To prepare the paper, a literature study was conducted, looking for relevant up-to-date literature within the fields of transportation, logistics, ICT and possible environmental impacts caused by freight transportation. Based on the results from the literature review, especially previous work on smart transportation management, an analytical model was designed and used as a framework for data collection and later the analysis. The data collection was carried out by interviewing experts from companies and organizations that are knowledgeable in various aspects of transportation management and usage of advanced technologies for transport operations and transport infrastructure. The approach was to identify the potential effects of using different components of the conceptual Smart Transportation Management model; Smart Freight, Smart Vehicle and Smart Infrastructure, on transport operations. Many interesting effects were discovered including faster identification, dynamic routing, real-time traffic information, increased safety, simplified carbon footprint registration, etc.
