Abstract
A new computer system, SASMIT (Strength Analysis System of Midship Part of Tankers) has been developed by the Nagasaki Shipyard & Engine Works with the object of simplifying the mathematical representation of the intricate structural shape of the hull of a large ship. It has been put to use in the initial design of a 400,000 dwt oil tanker. This system utilizes input-output generation for programming versatility and permits visual display of output data in the form of graph or table for easy use by ship design engineers. It is applicable to the selection of an optimum and cost effective hull design and also to the analysis of the selected hull design for structural integrity. This paper outlines the SASMIT with some examples of its application in the initial design stage of large ship hulls.
