Abstract
In 1978, the city of Edmonton in Canada opened the world’s first urban transport system based on the Light Rail Transit (LRT) concept discussed in this article. Over the next 25 years, LRT systems have been built in more than 70 cities worldwide. Of the approximately 350 tram systems now in operation, about 30% can be described as LRT systems, because they have been refurbished and modified to LRT standards. Due to historical differences and different approaches taken when introducing light rail systems, the term ‘LRT’ means one thing in Japan and another in Europe and North America. This article examines tramways and LRT systems bearing in mind the different definitions and the differences in rolling stock, lines and operations.
