Abstract

This article describes the overall goals and objective of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). It is also a cursory attempt to point out that mid-term results must be produced from long-term pavement performance studies if the studies are to be successful and are to be continued. Mid-term results can point the way to future results by making it possible for participating agencies to understand each other on a common basis and to share data on a common basis. This continuity of data collection, data storage, and data retrieval is perhaps the essential element of mid-term results of the Strategic Highway Research Long-Term Pavement Performance Study (LTPP). It is anticipated that, as long as these factors are kept in the forefront and as long as international cooperating transportation and highway agencies will participate on this basis, the success of LTPP (although 10 to 15 years in the future) will be assured by mid-term and intermediate term check points to ensure that proper and appropriate data and data collection activities are in place.
