CONCRETE PAVEMENT DESIGN CURRENTLY EMPLOYED IN NEW JERSEY IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHWAYS THAT ARE TO CARRY HEAVY TRUCK TRAFFIC IS DESCRIBED. THE DESIGN FEATURES ARE: (1) PAVEMENT THICKNESS; (2) SLAB LENGTH AND WIDTH; (3) REINFORCING STEEL; (4) DOWELLING OF EXPANSION JOINTS; (5) DOWEL COATINGS; (6) JOINT FILLER; AND (7) SUB-BASE CONSTRUCTION. THE EFFECTS OF CORROSION ON DOWELS AND THE REASONS WHY THE DESIGN INCLUDES EXPANSION JOINTS ARE DISCUSSED. INCLUDED ARE: (1) TRAFFIC DATA; (2) THE RESULTS OF LOAD-TRANSFER TESTS ON VARIOUS SIZES, SHAPES AND LENGTHS OF DOWELS; AND (3) THE GENERAL BEHAVIOR OF CONTRACTION JOINT PAVEMENT. /AUTHOR/
