Abstract

The relatively high accident rate involving cyclists in Dutch traffic urged the authorities to direct various infrastructural and educational measures to this group of high risk traffic participants. Each of these measures has its advantages, limits and drawbacks. This contribution illustrates the basic research program that has been started at the traffic research centre of the university of groningen to determine the conditions for an educational program for young cyclists, in order to improve their relatively dangerous position in traffic. A six year scientific programme is being undertaken to study cyclists behavioural and cognitive development from the novice (young) cyclist to the expert. The research program comprises five phases, which are presented briefly. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 816307.
