Abstract
The restoration of Tharwa Bridge in the ACT has achieved the objective of providing a high level flood route and main thoroughfare across the Murrumbidgee River, while preserving the structure's national heritage value. The design has kept as close as possible to the original arrangement by Percy Allan, with innovative modifications in the design of the truss and choice of materials increasing the overall capacity and durability of the bridge. A commitment to quality and use of modern construction techniques has delivered a timber truss bridge with an enduring visual appeal while performing its basic function. The spirit of collaboration in an alliance framework has been a key feature in the formulation and application of innovation in design, while fostering strong relationships between all parties.
