Abstract

The Department of Transport trialed the Hot In Place Asphalt Recycling (HIPAR) technique for the rehabilitation of selected lengths on two roads of its arterial road network. The process offered specialist treatment for pavement surfaces that required rehabilitation of aged asphalt in the wearing course only, that was cost effective, and that gave excellent environmental savings. This paper summarises the deign and testing conducted for the Hot In Place Asphalt Recycling trial. Existing pavement and testing for mix design is discussed, recycling processes and testing of both mix details (including binder rejuvenating) and pavement performance, is provided and analysed. Finally its cost effectiveness and suitability as a regular method for surface pavement rehabilitation is discussed.
