Abstract
A ship with an auxiliary icebreaking rotary bow is proposed as a means for improving the icebreaking efficiency of icebreakers. Analytical comparison of forces and energy consumption of both conventional and nonconventional (with a rotary bow) ships during the process of riding up onto the ice is made. It is shown that the nonconventional ship requires less energy and needs a smaller propeller thrust to break the ice of the same thickness.
